![]() ![]() The Voyager 1 team spotted the moon in 1980 when the spacecraft zoomed through the system. PT (0147 GMT), reach their peak at 27° around 9:19 pm PT (0419 GMT), and set around 1:50 am PT (0850 GMT). Atlas has a distinctive central bulge, leading NASA to give it the 'flying-saucer' moon nickname. The moon is only 20 miles (32 km) across, which is a bit shy of the length of a marathon. In Los Angeles, the moon and Saturn will become visible around 6:47 p.m. Jupiter is the brightest object in the evening sky aside from the Moon. Experience the wonder of the Apollo program, the lunar landing, and even see the largest rocket ever flown, a Saturn V rocket, at the Apollo/Saturn V. This view shows Atlas from the side, so it kind of looks like the ship from Flight of the Navigator. Compare that to Saturns largest moon, Titan, which is 3,200 miles (5,150 kilometers) across. Neptune glows at magnitude 7.7 a telescope reveals its dim bluish disk, spanning 2'. I also extended the area at left so as to be able to center Atlas in the frame. The photos were published in their raw form by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and provide the best look yet at one of Saturn’s most peculiar neighbors. In this image a faint shadow can be seen.that was visible in some of the noisy color filter channels but not in the clear channel, so I recreated it to show the same effect. It has a curvy flange of dusty icy material surrounding its equator, likely built up in its orbit outside the A ring. ![]() Twenty-four of Saturns moons are regular satellites they have prograde orbits. Also a lot of noise needed to be removed.Ītlas is about 41 km across at the widest but only about 19 km thick/high. Saturn: Atlas, Calypso, Dione, Enceladus, Epimetheus, Helene, Hyperion. This view looks toward the anti-Saturn side of Atlas. The view offers one of Cassini's best glimpses of Atlas, along with images seen in PIA08405. This image took a bit of fiddling, as the color data ended about 1/4 of the way across Atlas so I had to fill in the rest onto a monochrome image from the same set that contained the whole moon. NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured this view of Saturn's moon Atlas (30 kilometers, or 19 miles across), with its smooth equatorial ridge, during a moderately close flyby on Dec. Color-composite made from raw images taken by Cassini on Dec. It’s believed that the Moon formed billions of years ago, from debris from a cosmic collision with Earth. Saturn's "flying saucer" shaped moon Atlas orbiting outside the edge of the A ring. 7 hours ago &0183 &32 NASA/ Durham University/Jacob Kegerreis.
